China was
always Taiwan to us and the other places were too godlessly communist to mention. Meeting recent immigrants to New Zealand made the place even more intriguing with their stories of the capitals of China, The German city of Qingdao ( a German city in China? At the turn of the 19th century, the Germany had owned by treaty the place and hurriedly put up a city in German style. It must have been at breakneck pace judging by the size of the original city and the number of buildings from that era still remaining)

These days it seems to be the number one concern of the rest of the world . What will china do? And strangely for a communist country , it now seems to have the most efficiently functioning capitalist system the world has seen. Of course it isn't either, its a chinese system , with all the apparent contradictions that implies to western sensibility. Why there wouldn't be one never seems to occur to the western media , but makes perfect sense to all Chinese , whichever their political persuasion.

<dl class="wp-caption alignleft" id="attachment_316" style="background-color: #f3f3f3; Unexpectedly I found my self fascinated by the concept of a tonal language , and the arcane but highly sophisticated writing system . I was , and still am , very enthusiastic about learning more about chinese culture , language and cuisine.
Photographically I wanted to explore another country and culture , particularly one where English wasn't a major language, and to see what I could acheive travelling relatively in that kind of environment.

Tiananmen square , Beijing

I expected to ease into the language on arrival in Beijing. Despite the previous eighteen months with regular lessons I didn't feel confident with the language, but arriving off the plane by myself was quite a shock . I needed to speak straight away to do the basics , find a taxi and get to the hostel then buy food . Thankfully the hostel staff there and later in other places all had a very good command of English , but once outside the doors it was very different.
I spent a couple of days in Beijing by myself , exploring the city , experiencing a few of the tourist traps and well run historical sites. I spent half a day in the forbidden city and sadly it wasn't enough time . despite having purchase a map at the entrance , I found it to big to take in in the time I had allocated. I had by passed the hall of clocks with the thought that it might not be that interesting but later seeing the fabulous timepieces in that location I regretted the decision.

Bridal photographers window , Beijing

After carefully avoiding the year of the olympics , I had found an independant tour company that seemed to offer what I was looking for , independent travel with language and logistical support . On the internet I found www.dragonbuschina.com, it seemed to be the solution to the sort of service I was looking for , rather than the package tour kind of trip with sights and Hotels included.
It was avery good experience and way to travel China, and although we went to places that seemed obvious tour destinations , there were often few , if any other europeans there . In fact the bulk of tourists in China are chinese , going to experience some of the highlights of the country often for the very first time .

Electrical wire Beijing

Comrade Obama in Beijing shop window

Our Guide Andy's knowledge of local areas and appreciation of aspects of chinese life was impressive. An Australian married to a chinese woman who spoke fluent mandarin and has lived in China for nine years, he had a good knowledge of how everything worked and how to interact with Chinese.
After meting the other members of the tour , we unanimously agreed at our hostel in Beijing the first thing we all wanted to do was see the Great wall, Although a day trip was included , we all were very keen to see it , even if it meant going to Badaling , the main great wall tour destination. Andy warned us it might be a little crowded and so it turned out to be, with a mass of humanity moving up and down the wall between the first three towers heading up the hill , after that as the hill got steeper, the crowd thinned out . Nevertheless , the approach to the great wall was an awe inspiring experience and to see Chairman Mao's statement that "if you haven't been to the great wall then you aren't a real man" was greatly encouraging to my masculinity. After the trip to the Great wall , we spent the afternoon at the temple of heaven , another vast historical site in Beijing . On entering the exterior park we encountered many , mostly older people playing shuttlecock ( where a shuttlecock is kicked around a circle of people) and others talking and playing musical instruments. The weather was cool , so every one including us , was dressed warmly.
The temple of heaven is the last in a series of locations running through the centre of Beijing where the emperors , lived or received guidance. An aerial map showed me the way the city was laid out all the way from the bell and drum towers through the Forbidden city to the far end of the temple of heaven.
After a very spicy Hainan style meal we enjoyed with Andy, learning the finer points of shouting FUWUYUAN! to get the waiters attention. After the meal we bought some food and water in preparation for the next day when we would do a hike along the Wall from Scimitai to Jinshanliang .
The hike along proved to be one of the highlights of the trip . On arrival at Scimitai, we were immediately confronted with some of the spectacular feats of engineering the wall with towers and the wall following a dizzying path along ridge lines that seemed somewhat pointless to defend in the first instance as they only guarded steep cliffs - perhaps they in themselves would prove no obstacle to a determined invader. The approach to the wall meant running a gauntlet of hawkers selling everything from souveniers to bottled water . After talking to some of the sellers I discovered they were usually farmers in the growing season but to make some additional cash in the other seasons they sold stuff on the wall . I also discovered that if you might look like you were going to buy something , or the possibility of any other financial transaction , then my limited mandarin was immediately understandable by the seller who might benefit, and it didn't matter how badly I mangled tones or grammar, and spirited negotiation was a good way to quickly improve. This was to prove very useful later on . Andy said I should be happy to buy stuff I was getting so many free lessons.
The great wall is best taken step by step. In some sections I would look up to see what seemed like thousands of stairs heading up a hill and despaired I was ever going to get to the top , but slowly we did , then headed down the next hill and started to repeat the experience. Thankfully despite poor weather the two days previous, the day was hazy but fine, a cool breeze was welcome . Some of the sections of the wall we traversed were in poor condition with steep drops either side , it was a nerve wracking climb to get through one of the towers
Some of the time on that day was really quite magical . I frequently got left behind when stopping to take photographs and often found myself completely alone , which in one of the worlds most populated countries seemed quite strange.

<dl class="wp-caption alignright" id="attachment_256" style="background-color: #f3f3f3; A few aspects stood out - the large plaque that denounced the agreement of shame , when the five powers invaded China. That was news to me and I wondered who the five powers might have been . As it turned out it was the usual suspects - Britain , France , Russia , Germany and the USA. I got the feeling suspicion of the west was definitely not just a communist era phenomenon. I walked quietly by to a display of the dowager empress Cixi , who maintained power and her position in China by quietly assassination of any potential heirs to the monarchy.
The parks at that time of year were really pretty . Although the vegetation was mostly brown , recovering from the winter. The lakes were iced over and deer ran over the top between the shores. A stream of people strolled through the paths , many tour groups but a lot of locals as well. A closed amusement area hinted at the parks summertime use . With another member of the tour group I was on , we climbed one of the pagodas and then a hill that overlooked the main part of the city , as well as the summer residence.

Rou jia mou being prepared

Street Scene , Chengde

Buddist Monk , Chengde

Temple buildings in the baby Potala palace , Chengde

Tai Chi in the summer residence , Chengde

Prayer flags and triple glaze tang dynasty ceramics, Chengde

On a day trip we went to the Baby Potala palace. Built by one of the emperors to host the emperor of Tibet when he came to stay - which could be for extended periods so I guess it was to make him comfortable .
I was very surprised given all the reports about religious suppression in China how prevalent monasteries and temples are , I asked how seriously people took them , considering they were supposed to be living in a secular state and the answer was that nobody took it too seriously , but if you really wanted something , there was no harm in going to the temple to pray for it . that made sense . An RMB each way.
In Addition, the government seemed to be going to a lot of trouble to make sure many of these places were well preserved and maintained. Perhaps they are having a RMB each way too.
After retuning to Beijing for a couple of nights, and negotiating the Beijing railway station , we caught the hi speed train to Qingdao. We passed through Jinan and Weifang along with other cities on the way. The train was incredibly smooth and comfortable , totally unlike other trains I have been on , not that I have been on many. I spent some time talking with the people sitting next to me on the train ,(and later met them again while negotiating the Qingdao coastal walk ) .
John is a phsycologist studying English and his partner Dujuan worked at a wool importing company so knew quite a lot about New Zealand.

Monks in the Baby Potala Palace,Chengde

Musician, the baby Potala palace Chengde

At Qingdao we stayed in a hostel in an old observatory on the top of a hill in the German quarter. Walking around to the back of the building gave a spectacular view of the city . People came to the top of the hill in the morning and the evening to play Jianzi , a shuttlecock game where a shuttlecock is kicked through the air by players standing in circle .
One of the main benefits of the dragon bus service is that the guides know the best places to eat in the cities we pass through , and you don't have to pay a fortune. Qingdao has the usual western fast food food restaurants you can find in any international tourist city but if you know about them ,it has the most fantastic small restaurants specialising in seafood, dumplings and other foods . One seafood meal we enjoyed in a small hole in the wall restaurant was superbly cooked ,and served with ( what else?) Qingdao beer. It was a a little strange the group of us entering the restaurant and taking over the entire room , and the interior decoration was nothing special , but the food really didn't disappoint.
Walking down to the main city area and the waterfront was easy and interesting ,,. Not only were there the old German buildings but some curiosities like a Russian orthodox church made of a deep red , almost purple, coloured brick .

Old and new buildings , Qingdao

Mayday memorial , Qingdao

Qingdao is a very large industrial city , and the old city is surrounded with ranks of large apartment buildings in various stages of completion . The outer areas of the city are home to many heavy industries, but curiously , one of the main businesses in the Central area is wedding photography. People come from all over the interior of China to have their wedding photography done by the Sea,, to the extent there is a strre called wedign photography street. On any given day you can see recently married couples getting their best set of pictures
taken at the seaside .
A walk through the Badaguan scenic area also reveals an interesting mix of building styles.

Sculpture , downtown Qingdao

Photography in Samoa

A couple of years ago I was given the a job to produce a number of photographs for a tourism brochure for Samoa. The deadline was very tight and so was the brief, a range of photographs had to be produced making Samoa appealing as a holiday destination . I had spent some time working there some years before so knew a little of what to expect in terms of the conditions there , so was well equipped for the assignment. The weather proved unexpectedly challenging but fortunately was never for too long.
People were generally friendly and helpful which made getting the right images easier than it might have been . Despite the challenges of shooting a whole country in seven days the assignment was a success with the images subsequently used widely in brochure and other advertising collateral.<br While many photographers might have one particular style of portrait , generally most professionals might have to work in many different styles to cater to different clients. There could be the executive or business portrait , the actor/actress portrait, the candid portrait or the illustrative or character portrait.
Portrait photography can be done in a studio with controlled light , or in a location that says something about the subject ( environmental portraiture) . It can have studio light used or natural light , or a combination of the two . The options are endless and that is even before you get into any kind of digital manipulation.

Different clients might have unique requirements . For example : a magazine might require relaxed "natural" portraiture where a business might need more formal photography,

Avertising and photography for magazines and book always needs to take into account page shapes and also space for titles and text, and because of that it needs to be remembered that

the photograph in itself may not look like the most brilliant composition , but when text or titles is added then they complete the image as was intended

Group portrait photography 2

This image was of one of the people working at the kiwi spit roast barbecue king company, a photography shoot I did for a commercial mayonnaise brand promotion . I used the wonderful 85mm 1.2 canon lens to control the backgrounds with its wide aperture and ability to make interesting things out of areas that may not look so good in focus - of course the wide aperture also gives the opportunity to be more flexible in low light areas so there is less fiddling around with lights etc making the subjects nervous.
Continuing on with the people theme , this was taken earlier this year as a portrait of the production team for a cookbook I was working on . It was carefully staged to look natural - I prefer to work that way so usually pick the location and relax the subjects into it . I used available light and a little bit of flash to compensate for the overhead lighting . I was Pleased with the result as commercial kitchens can look a bit grim sometimes.

Group portrait photography 1

I photographed this group of property agents in Epsom the other day out side their offices in a prominent building of the area. It was a great opportunity to do something a bit different from the regular corporate shot and also to use black and white. The brief was to have them moving and not looking too static , and to fit a panoramic format as that was the size of the promotional piece they were planning. a quick visit to the site and some initial planning to work out the angle. Then it took a little direction to get them moving the right way and the biggest issue was yelling over the noise of the traffic! We were all very pleased with the outcome.

How retouch a picture 2

In this image , I used retouching to add to the numbers of people available for the image. This was an image created for a Pr company to publicise 250 years of Guinness stout.
The ideas was to create a publicity stunt where 250 people would assemble themselves on a field in the form of a giant Guinness glass. Unfortunately on the day numbers came up short so as a publicity stunt for press it didn't really happen. However with a bit of retouching and creation of additional people to boost numbers a useful illustrative piece could be created - so the day didn't go wasted!

In this case I was down the rankings for photographers as the press people got the pole position so not having the right angle created some extra work. It wasn't a particularly simple job to retouch and took a day of intense people creation so not to have too much repetition in the image - The human eye is very good at picking up repeating patterns so it was important there not be any looking exactly the same.

On a more technical note - I shot the scene with both Canon 35mm and Hasselblad medium format digital cameras. The medium format camera gave me some additional colour depth and field flatness ( because I was able to use a comparatively longer lens ) which made finalising the retouching much easier.

Below you can see a few of the before and after shots .

<img style="float:right; I'm not really a big fan of retouching , more of a photographic purist and like to get things right in the camera . But if you need it to tell the story , it is essential.

This was a shoot I did with John Edgar(www.johnedgar.co.nz) , currently New Zealand's premiere sculptor. He had produced a series of sculptures that centred around his Scottish ancestry. Pieces of New Zealand and Scottish stone were bonded together to represent both nations.

Originally we had this idea we could take them out to photograph in the landscape in various locations, but weather and the problems of moving pieces of 100kg stone , along with the impending deadlines of having to ship them to Scotland for an exhibition precluded this possibility.

While we were able to produce studio photography on location in John's Studio with few issues , getting the works out of the studio to anywhere was a problem. I suggested retouching them in to landscape photographs I had taken around the area previously. It added an extra illustrative dimension to the exhibition catalogue that it lacked . So technology creates a solution - if you plan to use it.

You can see the pillow sculpture where it started in the studio, the creek it is lying in was created out of a much smaller creek , the other backgrounds were shot as they appear , on large format film .

How to take a portrait photograph - the simple version

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v19.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D800afbbed6f2c13b%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330229909%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D848418A2182021B166FD0959153C387AE9031E45.38FBAAB0B9132543143140AAECA56D19A81A733E%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D800afbbed6f2c13b%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DSOUalzGByAHWFElcDV0E1R8BbJ0&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

This is a video I was involved with a while ago for a Friend to help promote their

business of prints on canvas( www.my canvas.co.nz) It was shot by Duncan Mcadams ( www.mcadams.co.nz ) . Anticipating a bit of action when the pudding was set on fire I took a video at the clients request , not a big deal , maybe for web use, but a video needs a beginning and an end, a photograph captures the moment.

As it turned out , the flames weren't that strong and the brandy refused to ignite unless thoroughly heated. While distracted by the video process , I almost missed the moment! Everything was well prepared so it was just a matter of pushing the button and getting a sequence with the Medium format camera , but next time video will be better catered for with perhaps the assistant in charge.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v14.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D46dfbe1e6e43641a%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330229909%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7CFA581C0DF4B2049D72CACC968E0889A9108BB0.7657C1404C89D1003EF6FD7925ECFDABC0AE5D01%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D46dfbe1e6e43641a%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dzz94M6P5powv-57_lAgnNlWhcdU&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Thats David Sherlock from AUT handling the uncooperative flames.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://seanshadbolt.blogspot.com/2010/08/to-video-or-not-to-video-video-with.html' title='To video or not to video? Wind can be a factor and it can be a lot different 1000 feet up to to on the ground , not to mention cold, even in summer.

Weather in Auckland can be extremely changeable and a fine day can change quite quickly . Even worse there maybe no suitable fine weather and when there is it is at the wrong time for the light to be on the property you are trying to get the shots of.

Using filters both on the camera and in post processing can help , but it takes experience to handle these .
I must admit I have never been an enthusiastic flyer, but I do prefer buzzing a round the city in a helicopter with the door off to being stuffed in to a commercial airliner like a battery chicken.

Creative photography

After raving on about large format and quality in the last post . I should point out that sometimes its better to be there and to shoot with what you have. I took this shot of my nephew last summer clambering over rocks in a stream. Its not sharp , but it has something, the colour and the movement are interesting and its a great picture of him in the environment. This time the camera was a Canon G10 . I bought it as its one of the very few smaller cameras that shoots RAW digital files, and unlike the other cameras, while they aren't a huge step up from the jpegs out of the camera, they give just that little bit more in terms of quality and richness.

All about me

I am a photographer based in Auckland , New Zealand. You can see some of my work at www.seanshadbolt.co.nz

I have been in business for about twenty years now , through the most intense time of change the industry ( and many industries ) have seen in the past one hundred years or more . When I started in the industry , my employer still used a half plate ( 6x8 inches ) view camera to take passport photographs, 35mm film wasn't generally used in the commercial world as scanning technology was still quite primitive and the bigger the original transparency or negative the better. Photographers didn't need to know much about the technology at all , just how to make a good image on piece of film .
These days it seems like a digital madness . while it is great to have all this technology at our fingertips to be able to control the quality of out put to clients , at the same time the amount of new software needed to be learned for both photo production and delivery is extraordinary. And just as you think you have it all sorted out it changes again. Life with a roll of film seems so simple by comparison.

In the past I used multiple formats of film for the production of images . Everything from 4x5 large format film to 35mm and medium format roll film in multiple formats from 6x4.5 to 6 x 17mm sizes. I sill like to shoot a roll of transparency film once in a while to see what a

" real " photograph should look like , but almost all my work is now done on digital equipment for the sake of convenience for both me and my clients , although if the need arises , I still use film . Now the question has changed form " what format do you prefer to use " to - how many megapixels do you use. In my opinion , once megapixels moved past the 16 mp range , the question almost is academic .

Originally in digital land I used a 6mp Kodak 760 camera and the files from that camera were used from thumbnail to billboard size and were all satisfactory.

Nowadays I use 21mp Canon cameras and 22 and 39 mp medium format Hasselblad cameras and apart from the smoothness in the files , the main reason is the " look " the larger cameras give - richer and deeper colour and incredible detail.
